Knuckles

I would like to introduce KnuckleTattoos.com founder Nathan Black. I, myself am a tattoo collector and I enjoy seeing the fantastic artwork walking around the world. Sometimes the tattoos have deep, deep meaning and sometimes they do not. I’ve been following Nathan Black’s KnuckleTattoos.com page for a few year now and have always enjoyed seeing a reading why that particular person tattooed their knuckles. The knuckles are one place you can not hide, unless you wear gloves. I also like that it’s “All Knuckle Tattoos, All the Time”.

As you know I’m a big fan of your Knuckle Tattoo’s site. What made you choose to showcase peoples knuckle tattoos?

I’ve got a lot of tattoos and so do a lot of my friends. We always talked about what we would get tattooed on our knuckles. We made endless lists of possibilities, and set ourselves little competitions. For example the best knuckle tattoo if you are missing a finger is ONE DOWN. If it is a finger on the left hand you can go with DOWN ONE. I’m pretty sure every tattoo parlor in the world has scraps of paper with endless possibilities for sets of knuckles.

The collection did start with this set: HARD CORE. I met the guy in a video game store and asked him about his knuckles. His story made me realize how intense a choice it was. You can’t hide or hide from your knuckles. There is a lot of pressure to get exactly the right set, something that represents you perfectly.
What are some of the more interesting photos you’ve received?

KATE MOSS, 55170054, HALF DEAD are some of my favorites. I like the ones that are unusual. The classics are great, but when someone has something new and weird I’m all about it.
You take some of the pictures yourself and you receive some in. Do you receive more than you take?
I receive a lot more than I take. I would love to travel more and take more pictures of knuckles, but that isn’t in the cards right now, although even in Austin, every time I think I’ve got pictures of every knuckle tattoo in town, I meet someone new.
Do you receive more images from the tattoo artists themselves or from the collector?
Most of my submissions come from collectors.
From what countries have you received pictures from.
Everywhere from Cuba to Finland to France, England and Germany. There seems to be a pretty wide international following for the site. I’m really looking forward to the potential of getting sets from China or Japan where short sentences could be encoded on knuckles.
Most of the time I see very short descriptions. Do you ever want to know more? Or do you prefer ‘short and sweet’?
Sometimes I want more, and I’ll ask for more information. The site is about how p
